CMA CGM takes delivery of new flagship

South Korea's DSME today delivered the CMA CGM Group's new flagship. The CMA CGM CHRISTOPHE COLOMB (13,300 TEU) is one of the world's largest containerships with a length of 365 m, breadth of 51.2 m and a draft of 15.5 m.
Operated on the Asia / Europe trade, CMA CGM CHRISTOPHE COLOMB will be deployed on a line operated in partnership with Maersk (1 vessel CMA CGM, 9 vessels Maersk).
A distinctive feature of the ship is the forward positioning of the superstructure. This maximizes space utilization, gives better visibility from the bridge and reinforces the hull.
The ship's tanks, located underneath the superstructure, are protected by the double hull of the vessel, in compliance with MARPOL 12A which will come into effect in August 2010.
The ship is not only very big, it is very green.
It is the first CMA CGM ship equipped with a Pre-Swirl Stator. This, together with the twisted leading-edge rudder, maximizes propulsion efficiency and optimizes the vessel's hydrodynamics to cut fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 2 to 4 percent.
Energy is also conserved by an electronically controlled engine which reduces oil and fuel consumption by respectively 25 and 3 percent and allows the vessel -- if necessary -- to operate at super eco-speed (14 to 15 knots).
In addition, CMA CGM CHRISTOPHE COLOMB is equipped with a Fast Oil Recovery System which enables bunkers to be rapidly recovered at any time, significantly limiting the environmental consequences should there be an incident at sea.
